Adam, It sounds like you can isolate the problem to the the steering column someplace since this happens when you put the key in and turn. It sounds like a short or a bad ground maybe even a bad Ignition switch. It's weird it knocks out your clock almost like you disconnected the battery. I think a gearbox oil change would make the shift even more smoother.I had a big problem and heaache trying to figure this problem out.So i thought id help some others out with the same problem.Apply the grease liberally as vw did not put an engine cover under the shift linkage so water probly washed the old grease off.
